From Strategic Account Manager working on high profile brands, to Associate Director leading on the AI strategy, Jayne Lansdell talks about what she’s learnt in her 13 years at BGL and what keeps her coming back for more…
Back in 2006, I joined BGL Group after being a client for two years prior. So what inspired me to make the move?
Was it the small team of focused people, working on innovative ways of doing business? Yes, but more importantly, BGL stood out as an organisation where you could seriously make a difference and where talented people were given opportunities. The challenges were great, the accountability was demanding and the team was committed.
I initially joined as a Strategic Account Manager for one of the big affinity partner accounts, which formed the heart of the BGL Motor and Home division. I was part of a great team who built and shaped the business at a time of fantastic growth. After many negotiations and contract wrangles, high pressure campaigns and high profile brand and proposition launches, it was time for a change.
After a successful stint, I was given the opportunity to cross over into our contact centre business, BGL Customer Services. There, without too much direction and with the freedom to explore, I took on the challenge of modernising the contact centre technology by developing a strategy and putting together a small and effective delivery team. We were among the first to set up an innovation lab using real customers and advisors to test and trial video chat, web chat, co-browsing and SMS responses, before moving on to automated voice services and latterly virtual assistance.
You might think that this was a great opportunity and enough for most people, but yet another opportunity to take on a new challenge came a few years later. I currently find myself in the Business Technology department, responsible for the AI strategy and programme across our business, as well as looking after the Inclusion agenda and providing mentoring and guidance where needed. I’m learning all about RPA, machine learning, algorithms and developing real-life use cases for our business.
What keeps me here are the same things which inspired me when I arrived. It’s a focused team of people working in innovative ways and a business where you earn the freedom to explore and expand your knowledge and experience. It’s the challenges, and of course the opportunity to grow and learn with the people around you. Will I move on? I might, but it would take an exceptional organisation and exceptional people to even tempt me.
